BERKELEY, Calif. – In their first of two contests against Pac-12 foes this weekend, the Davidson men's soccer team fell 3-0 at California Friday evening.
With the setback, the Wildcats fall to 2-2-2 overall, while Cal improves to 4-1-0 with its fourth straight triumph.
Christian Thierjung put the Bears up in the ninth minute when he finished a low cross from Nick Lima.
Moments later, Davidson nearly leveled the score in the 10th minute through Maxi Pragnell, who took aim at the top corner of the far post, however, Cal goalkeeper Alex Mangels made a tremendous reaction save to keep the Bears in front, 1-0.
At the 17:50 mark, Cal extended its lead to 2-0 on Paul Salcedo's third goal of the 2015 campaign. Salcedo would also provide an assist on Joshua Morton's strike early in the second half.
The Bears' Jose Carrera-Garcia assisted on all three goals.
Matt Pacifici led both keepers with five saves for the Wildcats.
Offensively, Christian Fechter, Cort Coxhead and Jess Smith recorded two shots each for Davidson, which finished the night with 11, including four on frame.
Up Next
Davidson will conclude its trip to the West Coast with a 3 p.m. (EDT) kickoff against No. 4 Stanford Sunday afternoon.

Head Coach Matt Spear
"Obviously the guys are disappointed by the result as we believe we can win. Cal took their chances well, they have a lot of talent, so lots of credit to them. But we could have done better on their goals. If you allow quality players chances by not being sharp they are going to convert."
"We actually had a very good portion of the ball possession and created enough flow and chances to score. We were able to get forward and behind them in wide areas, but lacked the cutting edge to score. One of the game's key moments is that despite going down 1-0, we responded immediately with two good chances to equalize. The second shot, by Maxi, was definitely goal bound but the Cal keeper made an crazy save. A goal there would have been a huge confidence boost for us. Plus if Jess (Smith) can take his chance later, then we go in to halftime with a 2-1 deficit."
"This is a great trip as we had a lot of family and alumni too at the game. It means a lot to be supported so far from North Carolina. We move on quick from the game, no need or desire to linger, as we face Stanford on Sunday. It's another excellent opportunity and I am excited for the players and staff to switch gears and take on another top team."
