DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson men's soccer team stunned High Point with a last second goal by Myles Culley, earning a 1-1 draw against the No. 8 team in the nation Tuesday night at Alumni Stadium.
The Wildcats remain unbeaten in their last seven games with the tie, having not lost a match since Sept. 27. Their record moves to 8-5-3 after the non-conference draw while the Panthers hold a record of 10-1-4. This marks the Panthers' first tie since Sept. 23 when played West Virginia to a 2-2 draw.
Culley's goal was brought about by Alonzo Clarke, who fought off three defenders to corral the ball and touch it to Culley who deflected a shot of a High Point defender into the net. The goal came in the 90th minute with 10 seconds remaining on the stadium clock. The score marks Culley's team-leading sixth goal of the season and Clarke's first assist.
The Panthers were the team in control in the first half, leading Davidson 6-3 in shots and 2-1 in shots on target. The Panthers were able to break through in the 43rd minute as Daniel Lugo's well-placed header found the back of the net.
The 'Cats responded in the second half with increased offensive pressure, leading the Panthers in shots (6-5), shots on goal (3-2) and corners (2-1). Lucas Beltran was superb in goal for the Wildcats, making multiple point-blank saves that maintained a one score deficit for the 'Cats. He ended the night with four saves.
Noah Louzan and Matthew Thissell led the Wildcat's with two shots apiece. Clarke and Ayman Maadir played the full 90 for the 'Cats.
