Wildcats Fall to VCU in Regular Season Finale

RICHMOND, Va. – The Davidson men's soccer team snapped their seven-game unbeaten streak Saturday night, falling 2-1 to VCU in the Atlantic 10 regular season finale.

Despite the loss, the Wildcats ended their season with a 8-6-3 overall record and a 4-2-2 conference ledger, earning them the fourth seed in the A-10 tournament. VCU sneaks into the postseason with the win and 3-2-3 conference record.

The game was promising from the start for Davidson, who scored withing the first three minutes of play. Noah Louzan streaked down the field on a breakaway, scoring his second goal of the season and putting the Wildcats in front, 1-0.

With their season on the line, the Ram's defense clamped down on the Wildcats, allowing only one more shot on goal for the remainder of the match.

The Rams answered in the 14th minute as Sulaiman Abdul-Mateen got a header past Lucas Beltran, equalizing the game.

VCU controlled the ball for the remainder of the first half and deep into the second half, putting up seven shots on target. Beltran made five saves in the losing effort. Moussa Ndiaye notched a header in the 76th minute, taking the lead for VCU.

Facing a one score deficit, the Wildcats had multiple chances in the waning minutes of play, but could not find the net and fell to the Rams, 2-1.

The Wildcats return home to Alumni Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 8 when they host George Mason in the Atlantic 10 conference tournament quarterfinals at 7 p.m. The winner of that match will be reseeded and play on Nov. 12 in the conference semifinals.
