LAST MEETING
The two squads opened Atlantic 10 play against one another on Sept. 20, playing to a 1-1 draw in Fairfax, Va. The Wildcats took an early lead in the 14th minute of the contest, scoring on a long-distance throw from Jack Brown that found the head of Brady McGlone in the box. McGlone deflected the ball to Ayman Maadir, who headed the ball into the net. Maadir's goal held strong for the next 68 minutes of play as the Davidson defense faced 19 shots and eight corner kicks from the Patriot attack. The 'Cats had their own offensive chances, putting up 13 shots and earning a 76th minute penalty kick that was saved by Patriot keeper Jaume Salvado. George Mason found the equalizer in the 82nd minute on a header from Nacho Diaz Barragan.
SERIES HISTORY
The 'Cats and Patriots are knotted up at 5-5-3 in the all-time series. Over recent years, the Wildcats have had the advantage in the series, going 4-1-2 since 2018 against the Patriots and 4-0-1 in their last five games. The two programs have only met once in the A-10 playoff when in 2014 they played a 0-0 double-overtime thriller at a neutral site in Richmond, Va. The Patriots advanced after defeating the Wildcats on penalty kicks.
In his time as head coach, Mike Babst is 1-3 in A-10 postseason appearances.
STATE OF THE 'CATS
The Wildcats enter the tournament after taking their first loss in over a month, falling to VCU 2-1 on the road last Saturday. Prior to the VCU loss, the 'Cats have been unbeaten in their previous seven games, going 6-0-1 and 6-0 in conference play while allowing only two goals over that span.
This unbeaten streak propelled them to a 8-6-3 overall record and a fourth-place 4-2-2 conference record.
Key players down the stretch for Davidson have been defenseman Alonzo Clarke and Brady McGlone. After coming back from injury, Clarke has been a steadying force in the backline for the 'Cats, who have a 8-1-1 record and 0.60 goals against average when he is on the field. McGlone has moved from midfield to center back and performed well when in each position. He is second on the team in assists with five on the season and is second on the team in points with seven, after scoring the game-winning goal against Duquesne.
Davidson's leading scorer is Myles Culley, who had been a key reserve for head coach Mike Babst all season. He leads the team with six goals, putting him in a three-way tie for second in the A-10. He has also come up clutch, scoring a team-leading two game-winners as well as drawing No. 8 High Point 1-1 after scoring a goal in the final 10 seconds of the match.
Lucas Betran has been solid in net for the 'Cats in conference play. He holds a 1.01 goals against average in A-10 play and has tallied four shutouts. He comes into the playoffs with a .708 save percentage.
Overall, the Wildcats have a balanced attack with 12 goal scorers on the season and seven players who have multiple goals.
