STANFORD, Calif. – No. 4 Stanford scored with just nine seconds remaining in the first overtime to hold off Davidson, 1-0, in non-conference men's soccer action Sunday afternoon at Cagan Stadium.
The setback drops the Wildcats to 2-3-2 overall, while the nationally-ranked Cardinal win their seventh straight to improve to 7-1-0.
Jordan Morris' golden-goal and fourth of the campaign was set up by Eric Verso and Amir Bashti.
Despite the loss, Davidson's Matt Pacifici finished with a season-high eight saves.
Forwards Valeriy Sviderskiy and Maxi Pragnell led the Wildcats with two shots each.
Pragnell had the best scoring chance for Davidson as the junior hit the cross bar in the 62nd minute.
Up Next
Davidson will begin a four-game homestand Friday, Sept. 25, when USC Upstate visits Alumni Stadium.
Postgame Comments
Head Coach Matt Spear
"Stanford is very good of course. Their style is built around work rate and toughness. So it was real battle for our guys to match their intensity."
"We have yet to earn a clean sheet or shutout this season, but to hold them off the scoreboard to the 100th minute is really big, especially with our young defense. It was a huge test for freshmen defenders Jordan (Hill) and Tanner (Carlson), and sophomore defenders Matt Reinikka and Cort Coxhead also stepped up to the big challenge too, and Matt Pacifici was very steady in goal.
"The big thing for me about today was a strong response from Friday's loss at Cal and to give maximum effort and to stick together. Doing that paves the way moving forward. I am proud, so should Davidson."
