DAVIDSON, N.C. – Riding a 14-game unbeaten streak at Alumni Stadium, Davidson will begin a season-long four-game homestand Friday when USC Upstate comes to town for a 7 p.m. kick-off.
"It will be especially great to play Friday night under the lights on 1992 Team Field at Alumni Soccer Stadium after being on the road," commented head coach Matt Spear.
Coming off a 1-0 (OT) setback at now-No. 3 Stanford over the weekend, the Wildcats enter 2-3-2 overall. After holding the Cardinal scoreless for nearly 100 minutes, Jordan Morris, who is a member of the U.S. National Team, scored the golden-goal with just nine seconds to play in the first extra session.
Despite the setback, goalkeeper Matt Pacifici finished with a season-high eight saves for the Wildcats.
Senior Valeriy Sviderskiy continues to lead the 'Cats in scoring with two goals and five total points, while Alec Rotunda (1G, 1A) and Maxi Pragnell (3A) have three total points each.
"In attack, we continue to focus on composure, ball movement, sustained possession, and creating cutting-edge opportunities in the final third of the field," said Spear.
Winners of four out of its last five, USC Upstate comes in 4-2-0 following wins over Winthrop (Sept. 12, W, 5-4) and Gardner-Webb (Sept. 19, W, 3-2).
The Spartans are led by freshman Gordon Wild, who is also the nation's top scorer with 12 goals, including three game-winners.
On the season, USC Upstate has scored 19 goals in just six contests.
"Upstate is off to a strong start, and they have been scoring lots of goals. So our defending will be up for a big test. We defended resolutely at Stanford, so we look to lean on and expand with that vigor."
Davidson and the Spartans have met on the pitch three times. In 2012, Sviderskiy scored two goals off the bench to lift Davidson to a 4-3 overtime-time win over USC Upstate on day two of the adidas Classic.
