DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson netted a pair of second-half goals, including the game-winner from sophomore Louis Evans with just under five minutes remaining, to defeat Winthrop, 2-1, in non-conference men's soccer action Saturday night at Alumni Stadium.
With the win, the Wildcats improve to 4-0-0 for the first time since the 1980 season, while the Eagles fall to 1-2-1.
Evans' first career goal came at the 85:02 mark following a long throw-in from fellow defender Jordan Hill.
Trailing 1-0 in the 71st minute, Davidson's Cort Coxhead provided the equalizer with a left-footed free kick from about 19 yards out that curled just inside the right post.
The game's first score came in the 21st minute when Max Hasenstab took advantage of a Wildcat miscue and put his team-leading fourth goal of the season in the lower left corner.
After attempting just one shot in the opening half, Davidson outshot the Eagles 11-4 in the second to finish with a 12-7 margin.
Prior to Evan's difference maker, the Wildcats had great scoring chances from forwards Danny Davis (hit right at keeper) and Charlie Caswell (off left post), but were unable to capitalize.
Kenneth Perkinson led both keepers with three saves, while Sam Bissett recorded two for the Wildcats en route to his third win on the season.
Up Next
Davidson will continue its three-game homestand Tuesday with a 7 p.m. kickoff against in-state foe High Point.
Postgame Comments from Head Coach Matt Spear
"It was great for Nathan Marder and Zach Marks to get their first start of their senior season. The guys were resilient to find their winning ways."
"We challenged the guys at halftime to elevate their mindset and tempo, as we did not strive enough in the first half."
"Again, lots of guys pitched in for the win, it's a team performance and we have to get impact from lots of guys. A good example was late in the match, Drew Krueger and Quinn Dudek came in to help finish the game off."
"We created some good chances in the second half, but ultimately it was two set piece goals that won it for us. Cort's free kick was beautiful – that's a talented left foot added to a lot of practice. Louis put himself in the right place at the right time on a throw in and looked like a true striker hitting it.
"Winthrop definitely has talent. We talked about containing Hasenstab and he took his one opportunity well. But overall we defended well, with Sam handling the three-straight corner-kick flurry in the final minute."
"Our guys have done a good job this season to push through and stay together in tight games, and that's a credit to their conviction."
