DAVIDSON, N.C. – Coming off a pair of wins in the Davidson adidas Classic, the men's soccer team will conclude their three-game homestand with a 7 p.m. contest against East Tennessee State Saturday evening at Alumni Stadium.
“I am very excited to host a really good team in ETSU that is on a four-game winning streak,” said Davidson head coach Matt Spear. “They are an NCAA Tournament level squad for sure.”
“Playing at home should give us the confidence to give an aggressive, efficient match.”
Following a 2-1 win over Richmond last Saturday, the host Wildcats defeated USC Upstate, 4-3 (OT), Monday on a Brian McGue 94th minute penalty kick to improve to 2-2-1 on the 2012 campaign.
McGue, who also netted a crucial goal in the win over Richmond, was named Tournament MVP, while teammates Andrew DiLallo, John Pace and Valeriy Sviderskiy joined him on the all-tournament team.
Against the Spartans, Sviderskiy gave the Wildcats a 3-1 lead with a pair of strikes less than three minutes apart. Shortly after the freshman put away a chipped through ball from Drew Brown, Sviderskiy track down his own one-on-one that Alvarado was unable to gather and slid a shot past two defenders inside the far post.
DiLallo continues to lead Davidson in scoring with three goals on just six shot attempts.
After dropping its season opener at Appalachian State, ETSU (4-1-0) enters on a four-match winning streak, including a 1-0 (2OT) upset of No. 17 UAB.
Through five contests, the Bucs are allowing just 0.60 goals per contest. Offensively, ETSU is led by David Geno, who has three goals and an assist this season.
“David Geno, Itode Fubara, and Franck Doumbe are especially talented attacking threats. We will need to defend very well, while continuing to develop our fine attacking form from this past weekend,” Spear said.
Davidson will travel to No. 1 North Carolina for a 7 p.m. contest Tuesday. A year ago, the Wildcats knocked off then-ranked No. 2 UNC, 1-0, at Alumni Stadium.
