Davidson Falls in Straight Sets at Rhode Island

KINGSTON, R.I. – The Davidson volleyball team suffered its first setback in Atlantic 10 play Sunday afternoon, falling to Rhode Island in straight sets at Keaney Gymnasium. The defeat came by set scores of 25-13, 25-14 and 25-22.
Davidson was paced by Emily Franklin who turned in five kills, while Sabrina Shepherd and Kelly Friers each tallied four strikes. Defensively, Morgan Shannon registered 11 digs, while Mikayla Derochie and Shepherd chipped in three blocks apiece.
The loss dropped Davidson to 6-9 overall and 1-1 in Atlantic 10 play, while Rhode Island registered its ninth consecutive victory to move to 11-3 overall and 2-0 in the conference. The Rams were paced by Audrey Castro's 13 kills while Layne Self tallied eight kills. Rhode Island hit .237 on the afternoon, as Davidson was limited to a .072 percentage.
The Rams got off to a quick start with a 6-1 run to open the match, and never looked back en route to a 25-13 first set victory.
After falling behind 9-3 again in the second set, Davidson responded with a 5-3 stretch to get within four. Rhode Island countered with five straight points to secure the set, 25-14.
The third set was tightly contested as the two programs traded points to open the frame. With the score tied 20-20, the Rams created some breathing room with a 4-0 run for a 24-20 margin. Ciera Cockrell fended off match point with a kill, but it wasn't enough as Rhode Island took the set off a Marie Gillcrist kill.
Davidson returns to Belk Arena Oct. 2-4 to host George Mason and George Washington.
