Davidson Downs George Mason in Four Sets

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson volleyball team picked up its second Atlantic 10 win Friday night with a 3-1 victory over George Mason. The decision came by set
scores of 25-18, 25-8, 24-26 and 25-12.

Davidson improves to 7-9 overall and 2-1 in A-10 play, matching its win total in conference play from a season ago. George Mason falls to 5-11 on the year and 0-2 in the A-10.Â
Freshman Mason Rooney registered her sixth double-double of the year to pace the Davidson offense. Rooney turned in 13 kills and 25 assists. Kelly Friers chipped in 11 kills, while Mikayla Derochie and Sabrina Shepherd added eight kills apiece.

Defensively, Morgan Shannon registered 22 digs, while Davidson was dominant at the net, posting 15 total blocks. Shepherd had 10 blocks, while Derochie recorded five blocks.

After the two teams traded the first six points of the match, Davidson pulled away with three-straight points, which was sparked by an ace from Mason Rooney. But George Mason went on an 8-0 run to come within one 14-13, before a series of two blocks helped the Wildcats regain momentum to eventually take set one, 25-18

The Wildcats continued momentum and sprinted out to a 7-0 lead behind Bishopp's service. Davidson was close to perfection as the Patriots tallied only eight points that came from seven kills in set two. The 'Cats recorded 16 digs, holding George Mason to just a .033 hitting percentage.

After the break, George Mason opened the third set with a 6-4 advantage. Three-straight Patriot kills gave George Mason momentum until Davidson made it a two-point set, 16-14, off a 9-6 run. The Patriots held the lead until the Wildcats rallied on a 4-0 run to tie the score at 24, but two-straight kills from George Mason extended the match.

Davidson got back into a rhythm in set four, rushing out to a 10-5 lead off three-straight George Mason attacking errors. Four more errors at the net doomed George Mason as the Wildcats secured the match with a 25-12 victory. The Patriots were held to a -.061 hitting percentage as Davidson picked up four blocks.

Davidson returns to the Belk Arena Sunday to take on George Washington at 1 p.m.
