Wildcats Swept by George Washington

Davidson, N.C. – The Davidson volleyball team suffered its second setback in Atlantic 10 play Sunday afternoon, falling to George Washington in straight sets at Belk Arena. The defeat came by set scores of 25-18, 25-19 and 25-21.
Mikayla Derochie and Ciera Cockrell paced the Davidson offense with seven kills apiece, with Mason Rooney chipping in five. Morgan Shannon registered 14 digs, while Emily Franklin had six blocks to lead the defensive effort.
The loss dropped Davidson to 7-10 overall and 2-2 in Atlantic 10 play, while George Washington improves to 13-5 overall and 3-0 in the conference. The Colonials were paced by Aaliya Davidson's 13 kills and 10 digs, while Kelsey Clark tallied 11 kills. George Washington hit .355 on the afternoon, as Davidson was limited to a .106 percentage.
With the score even at nine in the first set, George Washington used two consecutive kills and a Davidson error to move the score to, 12-9, and pulled away with a 6-3 stretch to secure the frame, 25-18.
Back-and-fourth action dominated the second set, which featured 12 ties and five lead changes. Davidson held a slim 12-11 advantage thanks to a Rooney kill, but George Washington went back in front with a 5-1 run, 19-14. The Colonials extended its margin to 21-15, before tallying set point, 25-19.
The Wildcats kept things close in the third set, but fell behind thanks to a 4-1 George Washington stretch. Davidson battled back to within three points, 21-18, but the Colonials found an answer and registered match point, 25-21.
Davidson continues its four-game homestand Saturday, Oct. 10 as the Wildcats welcome VCU to Belk Arena.
