DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson volleyball team was upended by VCU Saturday night, 3-1, at John M. Belk Arena. The defeat came by set scores of 25-23, 21-25, 20-25 and 23-25.

Kelly Friers paced the offense for Davidson (7-11, 2-3 A-10), finishing the night with 10 kills, .172 hitting percentage and a block solo. Sabrina Shepherd contributed eight kills while hitting .438 on the night.

Mikayla Derochie registered a double-double with 16 digs and 19 assists with Mason Rooney totaling 17 assists. Emily Franklin and Rooney combined for 11 of the team's 14 total blocks.

Kalah Jones and Sahbria McLetchie paced VCU (7-13, 1-4 A-10) with 21 kills apiece. Jane Feddersen added 13, while Tori Baldwin chipped in 10 for the Rams. Defensively, Rebekah Strange tallied 20 digs, while Feddersen had four blocks.

The two programs traded points to open the first set before VCU used a 5-2 run to take the lead, 10-7. Davidson rallied to even the score at 13, before the Wildcats created some breathing room, 17-14 thanks to the service of Rooney. But VCU wouldn't go quietly. With Davidson in front, 24-20, the Rams registered three consecutive points to fend off match point before a Rooney kill gave the Wildcats the set, 25-23.

Back-and-fourth action dominated the second set, which featured 11 ties and five score changes. With VCU leading 17-15, the Wildcats used a 5-1 run to go ahead, 20-18 lead, but the Rams rallied to take the set, 25-21.

With Davidson ahead, 11-8 midway through the third set, VCU went on a 12-4 run to open a 20-15 advantage. Davidson battled back thanks a 4-0 run of its own to bring the score within one, 20-19, but the Rams held on to take the set, 25-20.

The fourth set was tightly contested as the two sides traded points down the stretch. With the score knotted at 18, Davidson used a kill from Friers and a VCU error to take a 20-18 lead. VCU went on to score the next four points and eventually take the set, 25-23.

Davidson will step out of Atlantic 10 play when it welcomes North Caroline A&T to Belk Arena for a midweek match up. The match is set for Tuesday, Oct. 16 at 6 p.m.
