Davidson Defeats Fordham 3-1 for Second Straight Win

BRONX, N.Y. – The Davidson women's volleyball team posted its first Atlantic 10 win of the season with a 3-1 victory over Fordham at Rose Hill Gym, Friday night. The triumph came by set scores of 21-25, 25-23, 30-28 and 25-18.
Davidson improves to 6-8 overall and 1-0 in the conference, while Fordham falls to 6-11 overall and 0-1 in the A-10.
Kelly Friers paced the Davidson offense turning in 13 kills to go along with a .205 hitting percentage. Emily Franklin, Sabrina Shepherd and Ciera Cockrell added nine kills apiece, while Davidson hit .221 overall. Defensively, Morgan Shannon and Layne Doctson registered 10 and 13 digs apiece. Franklin added seven blocks.
Davidson sprinted out to a 15-10 lead in the first set, but Fordham rallied with four consecutive points to take the set, 25-21.
Back-and-fourth action dominated the second set. The Wildcats held a 24-22 edge before a block from Emily Franklin and Ciera Cockrell gave Davidson the set, 25-23.
The Wildcats opened a 15-9 advantage in the third set before Fordham used a surge to even the score 21-21. The two programs traded points before Davidson ultimately took the frame, 30-28, thanks to kills from Friers and Shepherd.
Davidson carried the momentum into the fourth as the Wildcat took the set, 25-18.
The Wildcats return to the court Sunday with a trip to Rhode Island. The match is set for 1 p.m.
