'Cats Head to Fordham, Rhode Island for First A-10 Weekend

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson volleyball team will hit the road for its first full weekend of Atlantic 10 play as it visits Fordham Friday, Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. and Rhode Island Sunday, Sept. 27 at 1 p.m.

Last Time Out
Davidson (5-8, 0-0) posted a 1-2 record at the Winthrop Invitational. The Wildcats fell in straight sets to Murray State and West Virginia before earning a 3-1 decision over Winthrop.

Sabrina Shepherd was named to the All-Tournament team following the conclusion of play after averaging 2.10 kills, 1.20 blocks and 0.30 digs per set. The rookie posted 10 kills in the win over Winthrop on Saturday. Kelly Friers and Ciera Cockrell were also impressive over the weekend, turning in 1.70 and 1.71 kills per set, respectively. Shepherd (1.20 blocks per set) and Emily Franklin (1.10 blocks per set) were a force at the net, with Morgan Shannon (3.90 digs per set) and Layne Doctson (2.60 digs per set) cleaning up behind them.

Protecting the Net
Davidson has dominated the net this season, posting 113 total blocks to rank second in the Atlantic 10. The Wildcats are averaging 2.46 blocks per set, while limiting their opponents to just 1.8 blocks. Emily Franklin (1.02 blocks per set) and Sabrina Shepherd (1.08) lead the team in stops.

Can you Dig It?
Senior Morgan Shannon has earned the starting role for the Wildcats at libero. The Roanoke, Va., native is averaging 3.76 digs per set to rank fourth in the Atlantic 10.

Rookie on the Rise
Freshman Sabrina Shepherd has made an immediate impact for Davidson. The Cave Spring, Ark., native currently leads the conference with a .417 hitting percentage, while ranking fifth in blocks (1.08 per set).

Honor Roll
Mason Rooney and Sabrina Shepherd have each earned an Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week nods. Rooney earned the distinction for the week of Sept. 8 while Shepherd was recognition for her performance at the Panther Invitational, Sept. 14.

Scouting Fordham (6-10, 0-0 Atlantic 10)
Fordham enters Friday's match with a 6-10 record after posting a 1-2 record last weekend at the Red Flash Classic, falling to Coppin State and High Point. The Rams most recently suffered a straight set loss to Stony Brook, Sept. 22.

Brenna Jones has led the Fordham attack with 2.93 kills per set, which ranks sixth in the Atlantic 10. Natalie Martinez has chipped in 2.26 kills per set and is third among the conference leaders with 0.43 service aces per set. Emily Fronk has taken on the setting responsibilities for the Rams and is averaging 8.05 assists per set, which is good for eighth in the A-10. Clarissa Cartledge (3.12) and Brennan Delsing (2.36) have anchored the Ram's defense.

Scouting Rhode Island (9-3, 0-0 Atlantic 10)
Rhode Island comes into the weekend with a 9-3 overall mark. The Rams have come on hot as of late, winning seven straight matches dating back to Sept. 5 at the Yale Invitational.

The Rams rank in the top half of the conference in most statistical categories, including hitting percentage (.257, second), kills (13.41, second), and assists (12.17, fourth). Rhode Island's defense is fifth in digs (14.41) and sixth in blocks (2.11). Franki Darnold leads the attack with 3.83 kills per set, which is good for fourth in the conference, while Layne Self has turned in a 2.76 kills per set average. Callan Kinnan has dished out 10.54 assists per set, good for fourth in the conference. Defensively, Lauren Williams sports a 3.00 blocks per set, which ranks her sixth in the A-10, with Audrey Castro's 3.27 digs per set putting her eighth.

Looking Ahead
Davidson returns to the court Oct. 2-4 as the Wildcats host Atlantic 10 foes George Mason and George Washington.
