ROCK HILL, S.C.
- The Davidson volleyball team split a pair of matches Saturday to wrap up play at the Winthrop Invitational. The Wildcats fell to West Virginia, 3-0, in their first match before defeating Winthrop, 3-1.

The Wildcats hit just .099 with Sabrina Shepherd and Mason Rooney registered seven kills apiece to lead the way. West Virginia hit at a .356 clip paced by Mia Swanegan's 13 strikes, while Hannah Shreve chipped in 11 kills.

West Virginia got off to a quick start with a 9-3 run to begin the match and never looked back as the Mountaineers cruised to a 25-8 first-set victory. After playing behind for most of the second set, Davidson trailed 24-17 before using a late 6-0 run to fend off West Virginia's match point. The Wildcat's late surge would not be enough, however, as the Mountaineers closed out the frame, 25-23. Davidson found itself in a similar situation in the third set, trailing 20-11, before West Virginia halted the late Wildcat rally and took the set point, 25-17.

The Wildcat's shifted momentum in their favor in the nightcap as Davidson defeated Winthrop by set scores of 25-18, 21-25, 25-21, 25-18. Kelly Friers registered 11 kills, while Shepherd added 10 kills to pace the offensive. Morgan Shannon had 22 digs, and Shepherd contributed seven blocks.

Davidson sprinted out to a 9-5 early through the early set. The Wildcats created some breathing room with a 7-5 run for a 16-10 margin. Winthrop pulled within five, but could not overtake Davidson as it earned match point, 25-18.

The two programs traded points throughout most of the second set, but Winthrop rallied with two consecutive kills to secure the set, 25-21.

The Wildcats got off to a quick start with a 10-7 lead to begin the third frame and never looked back. Davidson used a 7-3 stretch to go in front 22-15, before halting a late Winthrop rally to take the frame, 25-21. Davidson carried its momentum into the fourth set for a 25-18 set victory.

Davidson will open Atlantic 10 play Sept. 25-27 when it visits Fordham and Rhode Island. Fans can watch all the action live on the Atlantic 10 Network.
