RICHMOND, Va. – Dennis Castillo scored the game's only goal to lead VCU to a 1-0 victory over Davidson in Atlantic 10 men's soccer action Saturday evening at Sports Backers Stadium.
The loss drops the Wildcats to 3-6-3 overall and 0-3-0 in the league, while the Rams move to 4-6-2 and 2-0-1.
Castillo's eventual game-winner came off a free kick from just outside the box in the 60th minute.
Davidson had a number of chances to equalize in the closing minutes, but was unable to capitalize.
Matt Pacifici led both keepers with five saves for the Wildcats.

Davidson will head to Olean, N.Y., Wednesday for a 7 p.m. contest against St. Bonaventure.
Postgame Comments from Coach Spear
It is not the result we craved or desired. We aim and push for wins. But the performance did demonstrate more focus, grit and conviction.
Getting a clean sheet shutout remains elusive for us, but our defending tonight was stout. Jordan Hill, Matt Reinikka, and Nathan Marder were a strong nucleus plus Cort Coxhead and Tanner Carlson handled the wide areas well. It took a perfectly hit free kick to beat us.
VCU is talented and it's an exciting and tough environment with a 50-plus person band stationed behind our bench. But I thought our guys harnessed it well.
We created some good chances to score, especially in the second half with Matt's header on a corner from Christian Fechter and Nile Chau sliding in on the back post on the cross from Aidan Peterson.
The coaches remain convinced we will turn the corner and the players just have to keep learning and pushing. Our defending improved tonight and we can build on that.
