DAVIDSON, N.C. – After concluding its regular season with a pair of overtime victories, fifth-seeded Davidson will travel to Furman for the opening round of the 2013 Southern Conference Men's Soccer Tournament Saturday. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
The winner will advance to the semifinals to face regular season champion Wofford, Friday, Nov. 15 at 5:30 p.m. The semifinals and finals will also be played in Greenville, S.C.
"Tournament time is always exciting," said Davidson head coach Matt Spear. "It is what you shoot for so many months. Our team is really pumped and we have everything to play for and the momentum of two recent exciting wins."
Davidson, which concluded its last week of the regular season with overtime wins over Virginia Tech and Appalachian State, enters its final SoCon Tournament 8-9-1 overall. The Wildcats will become members of the Atlantic 10 in July of 2014.
When the Wildcats and Paladins met earlier this season in Davidson, Bobby Edet scored a pair of late first-half goals 41 seconds apart to lead Furman to a 2-0 victory on Oct. 12.
"We don't want to look too much at the regular season match with Furman. However we feel that we did some good things that match and limited Furman to just seven shots. Clearly, we have to be very cognizant of Bobby Edet's speed but also the quality in Martin Ontiveros and Michael Gandier," Spear commented.
Valeriy Sviderskiy, who netted both golden goals last week, continues to lead the Wildcats with eight goals, including four game-winners. Fellow forward Max Pragnell is second on the team in scoring with six assists and two goals.
"Both teams are in different places now. Our optimism is really high, and we expect our energy, fight and performance to follow suit," said Spear.
Furman, which climbed as high as 12th in the national rankings, dropped its last three regular season contests and comes in 10-4-2 overall.
Edet paces the Paladins with seven goals and 15 total points.
As a team, Furman is allowing just 0.75 goals per game, but has given up six in its last three contests.
