GREENVILLE, S.C. – Martin Ontiveros netted the game's only goal with 24 seconds remaining to lift Furman to a 1-0 victory over Davidson in the opening round of the 2013 Southern Conference Men's Soccer Tournament at Stone Stadium Saturday evening.
The Wildcats conclude the season 8-10-1 overall, while the Paladins move to 11-4-2 and will face top-seeded Wofford in next weekend's semifinals.
Ontiveros' game-winner and fourth goal of the season was set up by Clint Ritter with a long cross towards the far post from the right wing.
Matt Pacifici was very impressive in goal for the Wildcats with a game-high nine saves, while Sven Lissek recorded a pair of stops en route to his ninth shutout of the season.
Max Pragnell, Chris Pettiglio and Alan Reiter led Davidson offensively with two shots each. Both Reiter and Pragnell had scoring chances in the second half.
The Wildcats' leading scorer Valeriy Sviderskiy also had an opportunity to break the scoreless contest, but was unable to get a foot on his sliding attempt at a centering pass.
