DAVIDSON N.C. – For the second time in as many contests, Davidson's Valeriy Sviderskiy netted the golden goal as the Wildcats defeated Appalachian State, 2-1, in overtime Friday evening at Alumni Stadium.
Davidson, which closed the regular season with consecutive wins, improves to 8-9-1 overall and 2-4-0 in SoCon play, while the Mountaineers fall to 3-7-6 and 1-4-1.
Sviderskiy's fourth game-winner and team-leading eighth score of the season came just 3:29 into the first extra session off a centering pass from Shane Macnamara.
Following a scoreless opening period, the Mountaineers scored the game's first goal in the 50th minute on a Stephen Chapman header off a pass into the box from Matthew Melton.
Less than five minutes after going down a goal, Davidson's Jake Keator provided his third game-tying strike of the season with a blast from just in front of the visitor's bench that bent inside the far post.
Appalachian State held an 11-9 edge in shots, while both teams finished with four on goal.
The Wildcats' Matt Pacifici led both keepers with three saves.
Davidson will enjoy a week break, before returning to the pitch Saturday, Nov. 9 for the opening round of the conference tournament. The Wildcats will find out their opponent and destination later this weekend.
Head Coach Matt Spear's Postgame Comments
On the Win...
"After falling last weekend to Elon in Overtime on a Golden Goal – and to Duke in the same way earlier this Fall – it's powerful that we have been on the other side of things the last two matches. It's obviously an amazing feeling for the team to rush the field. And the emotional high for the guys and the families is especially massive tonight since it's Senior Day. The win underlined that the team's dedication and mindset have stayed positive, and that spirit is so valuable late in seasons."
Thoughts on Jake Keator's equalizer...
"Jake's shot was crazy. First, it was one of those where your first instinct questions if it was the right decision from where he was on the field – far out and wide. And then once he hit it, the ball started moving not just with pace but it was twisting and turning that no one, including the keeper and let's be honest Jake too, knew where it would end up. It made me scratch my head, but in awe. And it really changed the game's momentum too."
On Sviderskiy's game-winner...
"Shane Macnamara made an assertive, well-timed run down the right flank. Shane did not start tonight, so I his legs were fresh and his work rate is always quality. He played the perfect cross as it was hit hard, low, and in to a dangerous spot. Val was once again at the right place at the right time and he finished it clinically."
