DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson scored early in each half to defeat Liberty 2-0 in non-conference men's soccer action Wednesday evening at Alumni Stadium.
The Wildcats improve to 6-4-1 overall, while the Flames fall to 4-5-0.
Davidson, which has fallen behind early in recent contests, grabbed a 1-0 advantage on Chris Pettiglio's eighth minute header off a well-played cross from Max Pragnell.
"Getting the first goal was important as that is a change from some recent matches," said Davidson head coach Matt Spear.
After threatening with a number of chances just minutes into the second half, Alan Reiter extended the Wildcats' lead with a shot from just inside the box that deflected off a Flame defender. Fellow midfielder Alex Givens assisted on the junior's first goal of the season.
Alec Rotunda just missed adding an insurance goal late in the game, but his attempt from in front was cleared off the end line by Liberty.
The Wildcats, who held the Flames to just two shots after intermission, controlled the shot column, 13-5, and held a 7-6 edge in corner kicks.
"A shutout is really important as it should be a baseline that we aim for each match. The backline was solid, but it was a full team effort to limit their chances."
Davidson returns to the pitch this weekend when it hosts nationally-ranked Furman Saturday at 7 p.m.
"The Furman game is big of course. With only six Conference matches, this is our third and their third. They currently have two ties for two points so we sit ahead of them with a win and a loss for three points," Spear said.
