GREENSBORO, N.C. – Despite getting off to a fast start, Davidson suffered a 2-1 setback to UNCG in Southern Conference men's soccer action Tuesday evening at UNCG Soccer Stadium.
The Wildcats fall to 6-6-1 and 1-3-0 in SoCon play, while the Spartans remain unbeaten in league play improving to 2-0-1 and 7-5-2 overall.
Davidson couldn't have asked for a better start as it took a 1-0 lead 21 seconds into the match on an Alan Reiter penalty kick.
"It was the perfect start with Shane Macnamara earning the penalty and Alan stepping up and confidently scoring," said Davidson head coach Matt Spear.
UNCG responded to Davidson's early strike with a Hill Gwynn header off a Justin Jones cross less than five minutes later.
"But it was wasted by allowing a goal minutes later. We failed to mark their center forward and he had a clear, open header."
With just under four minutes to play in the opening period, the Spartans grabbed their first lead of the contest on Dustin Gamradt's third goal of the season. David Reittinger set up the 42nd minute score and eventual game-winner with a cross following a set piece.
"That lack of focus and hunger happened again with a wide-open header on their second goal," said Spear.
"Once UNCG got the lead they did the right thing and bunkered in to compact the space; and we were not sharp or clever enough to break through."
For the fifth straight match, Davidson outshot its opponent holding a 10-8 edge. In addition, the Wildcats finished with a 5-4 margin in corner kicks.
"This is a frustrating loss, because it's the second consecutive game we had more shots, more corner kicks and some good play in the middle of the field. It is inside the 18's where we were not good enough," Spear commented.
"Games are won and lost in moments and we dropped our focus in two critical plays."
Matt Pacifici led both keepers with three saves for the Wildcats.
"We did not hit enough of our shots in the frame of the goal and that lack of accuracy did not threaten their keeper enough."
Davidson returns to action this weekend when it entertains Bowling Green on Homecoming Saturday at 7 p.m.
"Our soccer has been good in many ways, but that doesn't always equal wins. So it's back to training and video and development to elevate at the pivotal moments."
