BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Davidson couldn't overcome a hot-hitting Gardner-Webb offense that finished the night hitting .355, falling to the Runnin' Bulldogs 3-0 with set scores of 25-17, 25-20 and 25-22 Tuesday evening at Paul Porter Arena.
Taylor Pisel was a bright spot for the Wildcats, leading the way with 11 kills and hitting, while Tindall Sewell also had a solid outing with eight kills and an attacking percentage of .273. Mikayla Derochie posted 30 assists on 39 kills, hitting .600 with six kills herself. Emily Franklin added four kills while hitting .600, while Caroline Brown finished the night with six kills and a trio of aces.
Franklin posted a pair of solo blocks in addition to a pair of block assists, while Anastasia Owen had 15 digs in leading the defensive effort. Brown had eight kills, while Derochie finished with seven. Pisel and Sewell each added a pair of block assists as well. The Wildcats had 8.0 team blocks and hit .175 in the match.
Briana Starr had a team-high 16 kill, while Taylor Lillard added 11 of the Bulldogs' 52 kills. Anna Pashkova dug 17 balls, with Starr grabbing 13 as well. Heather Feldman assisted on 43 kills while Amanda Murphy led the way with four block assists.
The 'Cats and the Bulldogs traded off on the scoring until midway through the first set. Back to back kills from GWU's Anderson gave them a two-point lead that soon turned into three. After the Bulldogs took a 19-15 advantage, the Wildcats were forced to burn a timeout. However, the break did little to help them regroup as Gardner-Webb took the next three points. Pisel added a pair of late kills but GWU would finish off with a kill and a block in taking set one 25-17 for the 1-0 match lead.
Davidson jumped out to an early lead to start the second set, cruising to an 8-4 advantage on a kill by Pisel. Two more from Pisel made it 17-13, but the Runnin' Bulldogs scored four straight to knot the score at 17-17 before adding two more to take a 19-17 lead. GWU picked up the next three points as well with a pair of kills by Starr before scoring the final three points to take the set 25-20.
Gardner-Webb scored four of the first five points to start set three but the Wildcats weren't going down without a fight, scoring three straight in taking a 6-5 lead. The Runnin' Bulldogs then topped them with four in a row in grabbing a 9-6 advantage. GWU continued on to make it a five-point lead on a service ace, Davidson mounted a comeback scoring five of the six next points in taking a 14-13 lead. The teams traded points, but it was the Runnin' Bulldogs who came up with the final three points of the set as the Wildcats fell 25-22 to drop the match 3-0.
Davidson returns home for a pair of conference matches this weekend. The Wildcats will host Samford in a 6 p.m. contest Saturday evening at Belk arena before returning to the court to host Chattanooga at 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
