DAVIDSON, N.C. – Despite hitting .221 as a team, Davidson couldn't overcome Samford's 63 kills and fell to the Bulldogs, 3-1, with set scores of 25-23, 19-25, 19-25, 23-25 in Southern Conference action at Belk Arena Saturday evening.

The Wildcats took the first set of the match before dropping three consecutive. Despite nearly making a comeback in the fourth set, Davidson falls to 11-8 on the season and 2-3 in the SoCon. Samford moves to 12-9 overall and 3-3 in league action.

Caroline Brown notched a double-double with a team-high 15 kills and 12 digs. She also put up four block assists on the day to help the Wildcats in a 13.0-team block effort. Tindall Sewell posted 11 kills and an attacking percentage of .588. Sewell was also a blocking leader in the match with a solo block to go along with four block assists.

However, it was freshman Mikayla Derochie who was a highlight of the match for the Wildcats. In addition to her team-high 36 assists, Derochie led the squad with six block assists and an attacking percentage of .800 on four kills. She also tied for second in digs with 12 and scored on a service ace.

Hannah Rau had eight kills in the match, along with a pair of block assists. She was also one of four players in double figure digs, digging 10 balls on the evening. Anastasia Owen led the effort with a team-high 14 digs to go with a trio of assists.

Katie Murphy led the way for the Bulldogs, who hit .199 as a team. Murphy hit .414 with a team-high 16 kills and also led the blocking two solos and five block assists. Stephanie Palmer posted 50 assists and also dug a team-high 18 balls. Libero Chelsi Carter, who finished with 16 digs, had four aces in the match.

After playing to a 13-13 tie in set one, Samford scored four of the next five points in taking a 17014 lead. The Bulldogs neared closing out the set, as three straight points put them at 22-19. However, the Wildcats rattled off four straight points to take a 23-22 advantage. A pair of Bulldogs errors ended the set in favor of the Cats at 25-23.

The teams kept it close at the start of the second set, but the Bulldogs once again pulled away after four straight points gave them a 13-10 lead. Back-to-back aces by Carter, along with a block from Taylor Palmer and Stephanie Palmer, put Samford ahead 21-15. Davidson claimed four consecutive points, capping things off with a kill from Brown, but a pair of kills by Gabbi Greenwald handed the set to the Bulldogs at 25-19.

Similar to the second set, Samford battled the Wildcats to a 13-9 advantage. A pair of Sewell kills cut the Davidson deficit to two at 14-12, but the Bulldogs would later stretch it to five at 19-14 on a Wildcat error. Despite committing three late errors, Samford was able to capitalize on a pair of late Davidson miscues and take the set 25-19.

Samford stormed to a 13-7 lead as the fourth set commenced and later made it a nine-point lead on an ace from Carter. However, the Cats refused to go away and tallied six straight points with a pair of kills from Rau to make it 20-17. Derochie added an ace and Brown slammed down another kill as a Bulldog error tied the set at 23-23. But the Bulldogs wouldn't let the Wildcats take advantage and put up the next two points to earn the 25-23 set win and take the match 3-1.

Davidson has an opportunity to rebound from the defeat on Sunday when they host Chattanooga in more SoCon action. The Cats and the Mocs are set to face off at 2 p.m. at Belk Arena.
