Wildcats to Host Elon, UNCG in SoCon Action

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson will continue on with their final slate of Southern Conference action this weekend when they host in-state foes Elon and UNCG in a pair of matches. The Elon Phoenix will come to Belk Arena for a 7 p.m. tilt Friday evening, while UNCG arrives in town for a Dink Pink contest Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
 
SCOUTING THE PHOENIX
Elon enters the match up with a 9-9 overall mark and 1-2 conference record. The Phoenix have fallen to both Georgia Southern and UNCG by a score 3-1, but earned a 3-2 victory over UNCG. Megan Gravely and Kris Harris lead the way for Elon, averaging 2.74 and 2.52 kills per set, respectively. Ana Nicksic enters the weekend with 7.15 assists per set and Maggie Reichard is currently digging 3.28 balls per set. The Phoenix rank fifth in the SoCon in both blocking (2.11/set) and aces (1.23/set) and boast a familiar name on the roster – Sydel Curry, younger sister of Davidson alum Stephen Curry is a freshman setter.
 
SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
UNCG currently sits at 9-7 overall and 2-1 in SoCon action.  The Spartans boast wins over The Citadel (3-1) and Elon (3-1) in recent weeks, but fell to Georgia Southern 3-2.  One of the top hitting teams in the league, the rank third in team hitting percentage (.226), assists (12.25) and kills (13.22) while ranking second in aces (1.33).  Olivia Humphries leads the way, hitting .227 with 3.22 kills per set.  Katherine Santiago leads the defense, averaging 4.62 digs per set while Emily McMurtrey (7.49 assists) and Sara Hohman (7.55) split time at setter.
 
DIG PINK!
Saturday vs. UNCG will be the Wildcats' annual Dig Pink match. The squad will be selling t-shirts for a cost of $15 all week with the proceeds going the Side Out Foundation, which raises awareness for breast cancer along as well as assisting with education and patient services. A silent auction and raffle will also be held to benefit the foundation during Saturday's contest. The team will be accepting donations throughout the month of October. Donate by clicking here.
 
EXTRA, EXTRA
After losing a two-match lead, the Wildcats rallied to top the Winthrop Eagles in five sets by a score of 3-2.  It marks the fifth time in 15 games Davidson has played five sets. The 'Cats have shown their perseverance, boasting a 3-2 record when playing a fifth set.
 
NEXT UP…
After wrapping up the three-game home stand, the 'Cats will hit the road for a nonconference tilt at in-state foe Gardner-Webb on Tuesday, Oct. 8. They will then return home to welcome Samford (Oct. 12) and Chattanooga (Oct. 13) to Belk Arena.
