ELON, N.C. – Sophomore Chris Pettiglio scored the game-winning goal in double overtime to give Davidson a 3-2 victory in Southern Conference men's soccer action Saturday night at Rudd Field.
The Wildcats' last overtime loss came at Elon in 2009, but Pettiglio's goal with less than two minutes remaining in the game ensured Davidson would not suffer the same fate. The win improved Davidson's record to 5-5-1 overall and 1-1 in SoCon play. Elon fell to 3-7-1 and 1-2 in conference play.
“It was a thrilling victory for the team,” said Davidson head coach Matt Spear. “Conference games are wild and crazy, and this one certainly was. I'm real proud of the guys for gutting out an important win.”
Pettiglio's goal came after an Elon foul gave junior Peter Paras a free kick opportunity. Paras shot the ball on net and it was saved, but the rebound bounced free in the middle of the goal box, and Pettiglio was there to finish.
“Chris Pettiglio scored the game-winner, but he also played a really good game,” said Spear. “He got his first start of the season tonight and had a great all-around match, so it was well-deserved for him to get the match-winner.”
Davidson never trailed despite Elon rallying to tie the game twice. Sophomore Jake Keator scored Davidson's first goal, while freshman Max Riehemann tallied the second.
Elon knotted the game at 2-2 in the 86th minute to send it to overtime after Glenn Scott found Daniel Lovitz for a goal from 18 yards out.
Riehemann had matched team-scoring leader Brian McGue with his third goal of the season to put Davidson ahead, 2-1, in the 75th minute. Riehemann ripped a shot from 30 yards out that slipped through the hands of Elon goalkeeper Reed Dillard for the goal.
After trailing 1-0 at halftime, Elon tied the game at 1-1 off a corner kick in the 57th minute, as Nick Butterly headed the ball into the net off of Gabe Latigue's kick for the goal.
Davidson took the game's first lead just before halftime. Keator notched his first goal of the season in the 43rd minute after classmate Alex Givens found him in front with a short pass. Keator was then able to tuck the ball into the lower left corner of the net from the right side, six yards out.
Senior goalkeeper Chip Sanders made a season-high eight saves for the 'Cats, while Dillard made five for the Phoenix. Elon was also credited with a team save after an Elon defender saved a shot by McGue in the 12th minute.
“Elon is a talented, well-coached team, so to win on the road in the fashion that we did is extraordinary,” added Spear. “This is a big win for the guys, and we'll build on this and create some momentum as we look forward to our next challenge at UNCG.”
The Wildcats play their final road game of the regular season and their third SoCon game Wednesday at UNCG. They will then return home to Alumni Stadium for their final six games of the regular season, beginning with Longwood Saturday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m.
Notes: The overtime match was Davidson's second this season after battling to a 0-0 draw at No. 25 Denver, Sept. 4, giving the Wildcats a 1-0-1 record in extra time in 2011 … Davidson's last overtime win as Sept. 18, 2010 at Gardner-Webb, while their last overtime loss remains the match at Elon, Oct. 10, 2009 … Davidson has led at halftime in all five of their wins this season … prior to tonight's match, Davidson had lost each match this season in which it allowed at least one goal, as the Wildcats had earned shutouts in their first four wins and one draw.
