GREENSBORO, N.C. – For the second time in as many meetings, Davidson and defending conference champion UNCG played to a 0-0 draw in Southern Conference men's soccer action Wednesday night at UNCG Soccer Stadium.
Senior goalkeeper Chip Sanders made four saves for Davidson (5-5-2, 1-1-1 SoCon) to earn his sixth shutout of the season, which matches his career high. He now has 14 total in his career to tie him with Jim Kelly (1983-87) for third all-time in Davidson history. Peyton Ford made one save to earn his third shutout of the season for UNCG (4-6-1, 1-1-1 SoCon).
Both squads played to a 0-0 draw last season.
Senior Allen Page nearly gave the 'Cats the win with just under four minutes remaining in the first overtime period, but his shot from the middle of the field, 15-yards out, went wide right. Page also had a header off an Alex Givens free kick in the final seconds of the first extra session that sailed wide.
Davidson's best chance to score in regulation came with just under 16 minutes remaining in the game, as a cross from the top of the 18-yard box by freshman John Pace forced UNCG goalkeeper Peyton Ford to make a diving save. Classmate Max Riehemann was in front, but Ford was able to smother the ball.
Junior Brian McGue led Davidson with three shots, while Austin Miller led the Spartans with four.
Davidson's six remaining regular season games will all take place at home in Alumni Stadium, beginning with Longwood Saturday night at 7 p.m. The Wildcats will then take on No. 2 North Carolina Monday at 7 p.m.
Notes: Davidson entered the game ranked 30th in the nation in shutout percentage (.450) … the Wildcats had six shutouts in 2010 … Davidson, UNCG, Furman and College of Charleston are now all tied for third in the conference with five points and 1-1-1 records.
