WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Despite Meile Songaila's second double-double of the season, Davidson fell just short to Maryland in five sets to wrap up the Wake Forest Invitational. Songaila matched a career-high with 15 digs in addition to 12 kills. The sophomore ended up on the all-tournament team along with setter Kinsey Smith.
The Wildcats dropped the opening set 25-20, but responded immediately in the second set. The team posted a .313 hitting percentage in the second frame and only had four attack errors. Elena Garcia-Guerrios led the way with eight kills and Davidson took the second set 25-22. Garcia-Guerrios had 12 kills and a .500 hitting percentage through two sets. The junior tied a career high with 21 kills across all five sets.
The third set was tied 18-18 when Meile Songaila sparked Davidson's strong finish to the frame. The Wildcats won seven of the final eight points to close out the third 25-19.
Even though Davidson dropped the final two sets 25-21 and 15-12, Kinsey Smith had some big moments down the stretch. The sophomore recorded back-to-back service aces in the fourth set and then on the very next point picked up a kill. Smith finished with 26 assists, eight digs, and tied a career high with three service aces on the afternoon.
Mia Compas was very solid in the middle for Davidson. The junior tallied eight kills with a .438 hitting percentage.
