DAVIDSON, N.C. – Duquesne utilized a 10-0 run in the second overtime and Tarence Guinyard scored a game-high 24 points, including three 3-pointers in the extra periods, to lead the Dukes past Davidson 89-83 to open Atlantic 10 Conference play Tuesday evening in front of a soldout Belk Arena.
After rallying from six down in the first extra session, it was the Wildcats that scored the first five points of the second overtime to take an 80-75 lead on a Roberts Blums layup and Sam Brown trey. But Duquesne responded with 10 unanswered, including a Guinyard trey with 2:16 remaining, to go in front for good.
Sam Brown led the way for Davidson with a season-high 23 points to go along with five rebounds and four assists. Backcourt mates Parker Friedrichsen and Roberts Blums also scored in double figures with 19 and 17, respectively. The 19-point night is Friedrichsen's best in a Wildcats' uniform.
Despite shooting just 40 percent in the opening 20 minutes, Davidson canned seven treys in the period, including three from Friedrichsen, while carrying a 33-30 lead into the break.
In the first extra session, Davidson rallied from six down and forced an additional five minutes with a pair of free throws from Devin Brown with just over a minute left.
Davidson had the final possessions in both regulation and the first overtime, but the Wildcats were unable to break the 69-all and 75-all ties.
The Wildcats turned the ball over just six times in the 50 minutes, but the Dukes finished with a 53-39 rebounding advantage.
Stephen Curry was in the building, along with Golden State Warriors teammates such as Draymond Green and Jimmy Butler, as the Wildcats honored the naming of Interstate 77's Exit 30 as the Stephen Curry Interchange.
