CHARLOTTE – Hunter Adam scored a game-high 16 points and drilled a crucial trey with 20 seconds left as Davidson defeated cross-county rival Charlotte 62-55 in the annual Battle for the Hornets' Nest Trophy Tuesday night in Halton Arena.
The Wildcats, who built an 18-point advantage early in the second half, saw the margin dwindle to just two, 57-55, with 31.2 seconds remaining before Adam put the game out of reach.
With its third straight win in the series and 10th in the last 13 meetings, Davidson improved to 3-0 on the young season, while the 49ers (2-1) suffered their first setback.
Adam, who entered 8-of-13 from distance through two games, finished the night 4-for-6 from long range to lead the 'Cats in scoring for the third time in as many contests.
Parker Friedrichsen and Nick Coval also scored in double figures for Davidson with 14 points each.
After a sluggish start by both teams, Adam sparked a 14-1 Davidson run with three straight triples to create separation and push Davidson's lead to 29-14 with 1:21 left in the first half. The Niners would close the period with five unanswered to cut the deficit to 29-19 at the break.
The 'Cats used another lengthy spurt early in the second half and pushed the margin to as many as 18 on a Roberts Blums 3-pointer at the 14:38 mark.
Davidson, which finished the night shooting 46.8 percent, including 10-of-23 (.435) from downtown, held Charlotte to just 35.2 percent from the floor.
Anton Bonke led the Niners with 13 points and 14 rebounds.
Tonight's meeting was the 52nd all-time and 43rd Hornets' Nest Trophy game.
