PITTSBURGH, Pa. – In addition to scoring his 1,000th career point, Davidson's Connor Kochera finished with a game-high 19 points to lead the Wildcats past Duquesne, 72-59, Wednesday night inside UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse.
Davidson improves to 13-9 overall and 3-6 in Atlantic 10 play, with each of its league victories coming away from home.
A native of Arlington Heights, Ill., Kochera scored 564 points in two years at William & Mary, before becoming the fifth transfer and 55th player in a Davidson uniform to join the 1000-point club. The senior finished 6-of-11 from the floor, 5-of-6 at the line and reached the milestone with the first bucket of the second half, a layup that put the 'Cats up 37-25.
He was joined in double figures by backcourt mates Grant Huffman (18) and Bobby Durkin (11). Freshman Hunter Adam came off the bench to match his season-high of nine for the Wildcats, who ended with 16 assists on 23 field goals.
After a Kochera 3-pointer gave the 'Cats their largest lead of the game, 46-31, Duquesne (13-9, 3-6 A-10) used a 15-4 run to cut the deficit to 50-46 at the 8:06 mark. That's as close as the Dukes would get as Davidson quickly responded stretching the margin back to double digits and putting the game out of reach.
As a team, the Wildcats finished 18-of-20 at the charity stripe, while holding a 37-31 advantage on the glass.
Fousseyni Drame and Jake DiMichele led Duquesne with 15 points each.
Davidson, which got a lift from its bench in the first half, used a 13-2 run capped by consecutive layups from Riccardo Ghedini and a trey from Achile Spadone to go up, 18-11. The 'Cats led by as many as 12 in the opening 20 minutes before going to the break in front, 35-25.
