DAVIDSON — Michael O'Shaughnessy's two-out, two-run double proved to be the difference in a 5-3 Davidson win over Villanova Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.
O'Shaughnessy's go-ahead hit broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the seventh and helped the Wildcats (3-3) secure at least a series win heading into Sunday's weekend finale.
Aidan Rice walked to lead off the seventh, and after two outs, Jack Cotrone singled to left. O'Shaughnessy then lined a hit into left-center, scoring Rice from third, and Cotrone slid in at home just under the tag.
It wasn't the only damage O'Shaughnessy did on Saturday. He also hit a two-run home run, his second, to right-center in the first inning to give the Wildcats an early lead. He was 3-for-4, while Cotrone and Jed Howard had two hits apiece.
Making his second start, lefty Cooper Cavanaugh struck out seven and allowed three hits and three earned runs in 4.2 innings. He held Villanova hitless into the fourth inning.
Matt Weber took over from there and pitched the final 4.1 innings. He struck out four, walked one and allowed just one hit while earning his first career win.
