Fordham's loss to St. Bonaventure helps the 'Cats punch their ticket
RICHMOND, Va. — Davidson's baseball team didn't get the result it wanted at VCU Thursday afternoon, taking a 10-0 series-opening loss to the Rams, but the Wildcats also got a boost from St. Bonaventure in the Atlantic 10 postseason picture.
Davidson entered the 10th and final A-10 series needing either one win or one Fordham loss to secure a bid in the six-team A-10 Tournament, and St. Bonaventure delivered an 8-5 win over Fordham Thursday when Joey Calabretti hit a three-run walk-off home run to left.
That means Davidson, now 16-12 and fourth in the league, cannot be caught in the standings by anyone outside the current top six.
The A-10 Tournament is set for May 20-23 at Capital One Park in Tysons, Va. The Wildcats will make their second straight postseason bid and the ninth in program history.
As for Thursday's game at VCU, the Rams scored four runs in the second inning and three more in the third en route to the 10-0 win.
The Wildcats (25-24 overall) were limited to two hits, singles by Forrest Lietz and Scotty Edwards in the fourth and eighth innings, respectively.
Starter Wilson Perkins logged 6.2 innings.
Trent Adelman and Jacob Lee homered for the Rams, who improved to 30-22 and 18-10 in the A-10.
