WASHINGTON — Davidson's Anthony Torreso has earned Atlantic 10 First Team honors, and Wildcat freshmen Matt Manjooran and Matthew Vannoy were named to the All-Rookie Team, the league announced Tuesday afternoon, on the eve of the A-10 Tournament.
Torreso, a redshirt junior, was named the First Team designated hitter, marking the sixth straight year the Wildcats have had at least one First Team honoree. With the selections of infielder/outfielder Manjooran and third baseman Vannoy, it's the fifth consecutive year the Wildcats have had at least one rookie recognized.
"Really happy for our guys to be recognized for their outstanding seasons," said coach Rucker Taylor. "The two Matthews started virtually every game for us and were reliable pieces throughout. Tony had an excellent run in conference play and elevated his game during that stretch. Hopefully we can have a lot of guys make the conference's all-tournament team."
A redshirt junior from Stratford, Conn., Torreso has done most of his offensive damage this year in league play. Playing in 27 A-10 games, he hit .381 with a 1.292 OPS, including a .781 slugging percentage, and totaled 12 home runs (all of his homers this season) and 40 RBIs. Torreso also compiled four doubles, a triple, 32 runs and 29 walks against league foes. He's twice been named A-10 Player of the Week (March 30, May 11) and leads the Wildcats overall with the 12 home runs, 50 RBIs, 102 total bases and 42 walks. It's his first A-10 postseason honor.
Manjooran, of Camas, Wash., made an instant impact in his debut season, hitting a walk-off RBI-single against Bryant in his second game. He's led or been near the top of the team's offensive stats throughout the season and enters the A-10 Tournament leading the Wildcats overall with a .339 average, 65 hits, 12 doubles and four triples. He has also contributed five home runs, 49 RBIs and 100 total bases, and in league play, he's hitting .345. Manjooran has moved around the field defensively, splitting time at first base, second base and in the outfield, and he was named A-10 Rookie of the Week on Feb. 17 and April 13.
From Raleigh, Vannoy has been a constant at the top of Rucker Taylor's lineup, leading off and playing third base in all 51 games. A switch hitter, he leads the Wildcats with 49 runs scored and is second on the team with 41 walks and 10 stolen bases. He hits .268 with a .774 OPS, including a .434 on-base percentage, to go with six doubles, a triple, two home runs and 21 RBIs.
The A-10 Tournament begins Wednesday, with the sixth-seeded Wildcats facing No. 3 VCU at Capital One Park in Tysons, Va.
