Villanova Tops Baseball, Prevents Series Sweep

DAVIDSON — The Davidson baseball team had to settle for a weekend series win over Villanova, after the visitors from the Big East spoiled a potential sweep with a 13-2 win in Sunday's series finale at Wilson Field.
Davidson, now 3-4, trailed by only a run after five innings, but Villanova (1-5) broke the game open with an eight-run sixth, then added a Scott Shaw two-run homer in the seventh to apply the 10-run mercy rule.
Davidson trailed 2-0 in the third and cut the deficit in half when Jed Howard drove in a run on a groundout. Then Jacob Friend's fourth-inning RBI-single again cut the Villanova lead to one run. But the hosts' best offensive chance came in the second, when Davidson loaded the bases with no outs. However, Villanova pitcher Alec Sachais entered the game and retired the next three batters to end the threat.
Davidson finished with five hits, as Jack Cotrone's second-inning double was the offensive highlight.
Starter Ryan Feczko threw 3.2 innings and allowed four hits and three earned runs while striking out five.
