Baseball Holds Off Late Villanova Rally, Wins 11-8

Davidson (2-3) got round-trippers from Eli Putnam and Jake Wilhoit, and freshman Jed Howard had a debut to remember with four hits and four RBIs.
Putnam's solo shot to left-center, his second of the year, got Davidson on the board after Villanova took a 2-0 lead in the first. Wilhoit's first blast of the season, a three-run homer to left, came in the seventh and made it 9-2.
Howard, the designated hitter, did much of the damage in between, providing RBI-singles in the second and third and a two-RBI hit in the fifth. He added a double in the seventh to finish his first start 4-for-4.
Villanova refused to go quietly, however, cutting the deficit to one run with a six-run eighth. But after Isaac Fix worked out of a jam and closed out the inning, Tyler Douglas hit a two-RBI double to left to provide a cushion.
Wilson Perkins settled in after allowing the two early runs and struck out seven in 4.2 innings, while allowing three hits.
