DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson middle blockers Kayla Davis and Sola Omonije turned in a pair of gritty performances against Virginia Commonwealth on Wednesday night, but the Rams prevailed to a 3-1 victory over the Wildcats from inside Belk Arena.
Davis pushed seven kills across the board with one solo block, while Omonije gave her best defensive effort of the season with six digs, three solo blocks and a pair of block assists. The duo also combined for a .321 attacking percentage at the net.
From the back row, Bella Brady picked up 24 digs for her third consecutive 20-dig effort.
The Wildcats hit a game-best .200 in the first, holding VCU to a .079 clip and closed out a 25-21 victory. After being tied through 17-all, an Anna Withee kill and one of Omonije's blocks allowed the 'Cats to pull ahead 20-17 and force the Rams into a timeout. Out of the break, VCU came back within one of Davidson at 21-20, but Omonije and Isabel Decker iced the game with back-to-back kills.
With a one-set lead, Omonije led off the second with four digs to push the Wildcats ahead 5-1, before VCU crawled back to take an 11-10 lead. After stretching it to 16-13, the Wildcats eventually cut the deficit to two, at 23-21, with kills from Davis and a service ace from Elena Garcia-Guerrios before the Rams closed out the set, 25-21.
Over the final two frames, VCU jumped out to a pair of strong starts that the Wildcats struggled to overcome. The Rams tallied 25 kills over the stretch and forced Davidson into 22 attack errors.
