WASHINGTON, D.C. – Luka Brajkovic scored a career-high 30 points on 11-of-14 shooting and Davidson erased an 11-point second-half deficit to rally past George Washington, 78-73, inside the Charles E. Smith Center Saturday afternoon.
Matching their best start since the 1963-64 campaign, the Wildcats have won 18 of their last 19, improving to 19-3 overall and 9-1 in A-10 play, while remaining unbeaten in true road games at 8-0.
Foster Loyer and Sam Mennenga also scored in double figures for Davidson with 16 and 11 points, respectively.
Trailing 47-36 early in the second half, the Wildcats' offense came to life as they opened the final frame 9-of-11 from the floor, while using a 25-5 streak to go in front, 61-52 with 11:14 to play.
Highlighting Davidson's game-changing run was 10 straight points from Brajkovic, including consecutive triples to give his club their first lead since the opening minutes.
The Colonials, who drilled 13 3-pointers on the afternoon, fought back and evened the score on several occasions, but were unable to contain Brajkovic, whose 3-point play with 56 seconds remaining put the Wildcats up for good.
Davidson, which entered seventh nationally in field-goal percentage, torched the nets for 66.7% percent after intermission, finished the contest at 56.3 percent.
Behind 21 first-half points from James Bishop, the Colonials used a pair of lengthy runs in the period to carry a 42-34 lead into the break.
Davidson scored the first seven points of the contest, but George Washington (8-13, 4-5 A-10) would later answer with an 18-6 spurt capped by four straight Bishop 3-pointers to go up, 24-16 at the 9:10 mark. After the 'Cats responded with a 10-2 spurt to tie the game, 26-26, the Colonials stretched the margin to their largest of the period, 40-29.
Grant Huffman and the Wildcats' defense held Bishop to just five points in the final 20 minutes. Joe Bamisile added 19 points for George Washington.
