Davidson saw its seven-game win streak come to an end Tuesday night with a 7-2 loss to Duke at Wilson Field.

It's the Wildcats' first loss since a 7-4 setback to Winthrop in Charlotte March 13.

Davidson (13-7) trailed Duke 6-0 by the time Trevor Candelaria singled to left in the fifth inning for the Wildcats' first hit off Blue Devil right-hander Cooper Stinson. Stinson struck out 10 and didn't allow another hit in seven innings of work.

The Wildcats broke through in the eighth against lefty reliever Adam Laskey when John Hosmer singled to left and scored on Alex Mardiney's double down the right field line. The RBI-hit extended Mardiney's hit streak to 10 games, and he came around to score moments later when Eric Jones reached on an error, cutting the Blue Devils' lead to 6-2. Greg Lowe and Justin Lebek then drew two-out walks to load the bases, but reliever Hunter Davis struck out Max Bazin to end the threat.

Duke (14-11) extended its lead to 7-2 when Matt Mervis homered to lead off the ninth.

The Blue Devils went to work immediately Tuesday. The first three batters loaded the bases in the first against starter Blake Hely, and Duke plated a run on one of the two double plays the Wildcats turned. Kyle Gallagher's RBI-single to left in the second inning made it 2-0, and the Blue Devils added three runs in the fourth on six straight singles. Chase Cheek singled in the fifth and rounded the bases on a wild pitch, a stolen base and a throwing error to make it 6-0.

Davidson used six pitchers, including Alex Fenton who in 2.2 innings of relief did not surrender a hit. He walked one and struck out two.

The loss to Duke is the second of the season for the Wildcats, also including a 7-3 result in Durham Feb. 19.
