'Cats Edge VCU 3-2 to Open Series

RICHMOND, Va. — Alex Mardiney's sacrifice fly to left field in the fifth inning Friday night proved to be the difference in a 3-2 Davidson win over VCU at The Diamond.
With the win, the Wildcats improved to 4-0 in Atlantic 10 play and 14-7 overall, while the Rams fell to 19-7 and 3-1.
Senior right-hander Casey Sutherland threw seven innings and struck out seven, while allowing five hits and two earned runs. The Wildcats' closer a year ago, he improved to 4-0.
Freshman right-hander Gabe Levy pitched the eighth and ninth innings, allowed three hits and struck out two to earn his fifth save.
Davidson took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Brett Centracchio and Justin Lebek hit back-to-back doubles. Ruben Fontes hit his conference-best ninth home run in the fourth inning to make it 2-0 before VCU's Paul Witt tied it at 2-2 with a two-run shot in the bottom of the frame.
Trevor Candelaria led off the fifth by reaching on an error and advanced to third on Max Bazin's single. He scored when Mardiney flied out to left.
Mardiney extended his hit streak to 11 games with a two-out triple down the right field line in the third inning.
Lebek was hit by a pitch in the eighth, which set the Davidson career record (28). He tied Kurt Davis ('99) when he was hit for the 27th time on Feb. 16 vs. Towson.
