CHARLOTTE — Davidson led much of the way Wednesday night at BB&T Ballpark in Charlotte, but Scout McFalls' three-run home run in the seventh inning propelled Winthrop to a 7-4 win in the Charlotte Knights' Collegiate Baseball Series.
With the loss, Davidson falls to 6-6 on the season.
Ruben Fontes hit his team-leading fifth home run — and fourth in seven games — to lead off the second inning, and Brett Centracchio hit his first round-tripper two batters later to tie the game at 2-2, after Winthrop (7-9) opened the scoring with a two-run blast by Hunter Lipscomb in the first.
Davidson pulled ahead 3-2 in the third on a double steal play that allowed Eric Jones to score from third, just before the inning's third out, as Matt Frey was caught in a rundown on his way to second. Back-to-back doubles by Fontes and Justin Lebek to start the fourth made it 4-2, and Davidson held that lead until the Eagles plated a run in the sixth on an infield hit by Grant English.
In the seventh against Davidson pitcher Austin Leonard, Winthrop's Jake Sullivan singled and Matt Levenson walked. Sam Reinertsen came on in relief, and McFalls hit his first pitch out to right.
Winthrop added a run in the top of the ninth on an RBI-single from Alex Raines.
The Wildcats got the tying run to the plate in the ninth, as Alex Fedje-Johnson walked and Alex Mardiney singled, but Winthrop's Colten Rendon struck out Jones, who had multiple hits for the seventh game, to end it.
