Box Score
GREENSBORO — In their first action in a week, the Davidson Wildcats returned to the diamond and their winning ways Tuesday with an 8-0 victory over N.C. A&T at historic War Memorial Stadium.
Â
The Wildcats (4-1) knocked 11 hits, while five Davidson pitchers limited the Aggies to one — a Camden Williamson single in the sixth inning — and struck out 15.
Â
"I thought we were okay coming off of a long break," said head coach Rucker Taylor. "The pitching was great. We threw a lot of strikes and got some strikeouts when we needed. Defensively, we need to be more consistent."
Â
After rain washed out last weekend's series with Fairleigh Dickinson, Taylor opted to give his weekend starters — Allen Barry, Casey Sutherland and Josh Hudson — some work against the 5-2 Aggies.
Â
Barry pitched the first two innings, striking out four and walking one, and Sutherland threw nine pitches to sail through the third. Hudson threw the next three frames and struck out four of the 14 batters he faced.
Reliever Austin Leonard pitched the seventh and eighth, striking out five, before Kieran Casey put the finishing touches on the win in the ninth. Â
Â
Davidson took a 4-0 lead with four hits and two Aggie errors in the third. Trevor Candelaria scored from first after a throwing error on Max Bazin's infield single. Eric Jones, Brett Centracchio and Matt Frey then drove in runs with singles.
Â
The Wildcats added three more runs in the fifth on a two-RBI single by Ward Coleman and an RBI-single by Alex Mardiney. Candelaria led off the eighth with a double to left and later scored on an error to make it 8-0.
Â
"Offensively, we ran the bases well and were able to capitalize on some chances that were presented," said Taylor.
Â
Up Next
It's a quick turnaround for the Wildcats, who will host USC Upstate at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Wilson Field.
