WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Davidson gave the nation's top-ranked team all it could handle for the first 45 minutes, before Wake Forest scored four second-half goals to get by the Wildcats, 5-1, Tuesday at Spry Stadium.

The setback drops Davidson to 4-4-0 as it enters conference play this weekend, while the Demon Deacons remain undefeated improving to 9-0-0.

In the 19th minute, Aristotle Zarris netted his third goal of the campaign to put the Deacs up, 1-0.

Just 71 seconds after Wake grabbed the advantage; Davidson's Stefane Zemmali provided an equalizing header and his first collegiate score off a Henry Howell corner kick.

Shortly after intermission, the Demon Deacons reclaimed the lead when Holland Rula found the top-right corner of goal from the left side of the box. Isaiah Parente and Aristotle Zarris set up the eventual game-winner.

Mateo Alzate had a chance to even the score again, but Wake's keeper Andreu Cases Mundet saved his header attempt.

Bruno Lapa put the game out of reach with a pair of goals late in the contest. The first coming in the 78th minute when he converted a penalty kick, followed by his eighth of the season 10 minutes later.

Wake also got a score from Koby Carr with just seconds remaining.

Sawyer Gaffney led both goalkeepers with five saves for the Wildcats.

Up Next
Davidson will open Atlantic 10 Conference play Saturday with a 6 p.m. contest against George Washington at Alumni Stadium.

Postgame Comments from Head Coach Matt Spear
Wake is excellent - they are talented, athletic plus they work hard.

Overall our performance was solid. We scored a great goal, which was the perfect response to their first goal. Super happy for Stefane. He's had to step up early as a Freshman at center back due to injured others and he's been very good.

And we earned several other clear chances. If we convert just one of those in the second half, we are in perfect position to steal the win and get the upset.

Once they got the third goal on the penalty kick, we shifted our focus to be sure we didn't over extend for just this game.

The scoreline is not flattering of course. But our focus was to get better and to spread the playing time around to avoid injuries and over fatigue going in to Conference play. We rotated four new starters from the last game against Winthrop for example. We played all of the available field players and that's a positive for their development.
