'Cats Crush Four Homers and 21 Hits in 18-6 Victory Friday

MERION STATION, Pa. – Davidson baseball clubbed four homers to rout Atlantic 10 foe Saint Joseph's 17-6 Friday at Smithson Field just outside of Philadelphia.
The Wildcats improve to 21-12, 7-3 A-10, while SJU drops to 13-15, 3-5 A-10.
The 'Cats tallied a season-high 21 hits in the contest, with six recording multi-hit affairs. Junior Eric Jones homered in a four-hit day with three RBI, and freshman Alex Mardiney blasted his first collegiate home run and doubled twice as he drove in five. Senior Alec Acosta and sophomore Brett Centracchio also homered as Acosta and classmate Andrew Born tallied three hits each.
As per usual, Davidson lived by the long ball Friday, taking an early 4-0 lead courtesy of two two-run shots. Senior Cam Johnson made his long awaited return in successful fashion, singling to left field, and then came home after Mardiney launched his first collegiate round-tripper.
They added to their lead a few batters later, as Max Bazin reached via fielder's choice and then came home as Centracchio blasted his fifth home run of the season.
Mardiney followed up his first career blast with a double off the wall the following inning, bringing home both Jones and junior Justin Lebek, who each singled. The rookie himself then came around to score as Bazin doubled him home.
The 'Cats continue to pound at the plate, exploding for 10 runs in the fourth.
Jones blasted his eighth homer of the season in the fifth, bringing home Centracchio, who walked, and Acosta, who singled. Lebek then doubled and scored on a sac fly from Johnson, who stayed at first after the ball was dropped.
Johnson came home on Mardiney's second double of the day, and then Mardiney scored on a single through the right side from Ward Coleman, who eventually came home by way of wild pitch in the frame.
Acosta then joined the launch party, crushing his fifth homer of the year that brought in both Born and Bazin, who each singled.
Saint Joseph's chipped away, using three straight singles in the third to load the bases with no outs, then scored twice on back-to-back RBI groundouts and two solo shots in the fourth and fifth to plate four.
A single and pinch-hit homer in the eighth further cut the Davidson lead, but Acosta added a run back on a single through the right side from sophomore Zach Nussbaum.
The 'Cats and the Hawks will conclude their series with a doubleheader Saturday. First game slated for noon and the second game to follow.
