MERION STATION, Pa. – Davidson baseball split its Saturday doubleheader with league foe Saint Joseph's, falling in Game 1 6-3 before bouncing back to take the finale and series by the same score at Smithson Field, just outside of Philadelphia.
The 'Cats improve to 22-13, 8-4 in league play, while Saint Joseph's slips to 14-16, 4-6.
Freshman Alex Mardiney tallied four hits and ended the series with eight RBI, including his second career long ball.
GAME 1: SAINT JOSEPH'S 6, DAVIDSON 3
Senior Andrew Born was the only multi-hit performer for the 'Cats, singling twice. Sophomore Ward Coleman picked up two RBI, and junior Eric Jones scored twice.
Jones led off the second with a ground-rule double to left center, then was driven in by Mardiney.
The 'Cats lead was short lived, as Saint Joseph's capitalized on two errors and five straight singles to plate five runs in the third. They added a run in the sixth off another Wildcat error and a single to solidify their 6-1 victory.
Davidson pressured in its final frame, taking three straight walks to Jones, classmate Justin Lebek, and senior Cam Johnson to load the bases with no outs. Coleman delivered a single into right field to bring home Jones and Lebek and cut the Hawks lead in half.
GAME 2:
Davidson again began with the lead, scoring three times in the opening frame. Born led off with a single, coming home on a triple from classmate Alec Acosta. Jones then walked, back-to-back singles from Lebek and Mardiney brought both of them home to put the 'Cats up 3-0.
The Hawks began chipping at the lead instantly, plating a run in the bottom of the frame then adding two in the second to tie the game.
Mardiney then launched his second homer in as many days in the third, putting the 'Cats back on top 4-3. Coleman added insurance, bringing Jones across in the fifth on a ball he again placed perfectly into right field to make it 5-3.
Sophomore Zach Nussbaum led off the sixth with a double, coming around on a single to right field from Acosta. In the ninth, the squad added cushion with three straight two-out singles from Mardiney, Coleman, and junior Max Bazin.
Senior Connor Gordon entered in relief and picked up his fifth win of the season, striking out six. Junior Casey Sutherland tossed two frames of scoreless relief, striking out three and picking up his third save of the year.
