DAVIDSON, N.C. – After their Opening Day comeback was spoiled Friday, the Davidson Wildcats bounced back in intense fashion, using 12 hits to take a 9-4 victory over Georgetown Saturday at Wilson Field.
Senior captain Jake Sidwell sparked the offensive explosion, pulling in a 2-for-5 day with three RBI. His first hit in the 5th inning gave the 'Cats the lead they never relinquished, and provided insurance with a two-run blast the following frame. Junior Cam Johnson also had a productive day at the plate, collecting three hits with a double and scoring twice. Seniors Tyler Agard and Will Robertson and sophomore Eric Jones each chipped in two hits apiece.
Georgetown once again got on the board first, taking advantage of two Wildcat miscues to go up 2-0 in the 2nd.
The 'Cats cut the lead in half the bottom of that inning, as Robertson legged out a triple to the center field wall and came home on a fielder's choice courtesy of sophomore shortstop Max Bazin.
Davidson plated the equalizer in the 5th, after Agard and Johnson both singled, and Agard took advantage of a swinging-third-strike wild pitch to cross home. Enter Sidwell. With Johnson on second, the veteran sliced one up the right side of the infield, finding a gap and bringing the go-ahead run across.
Leading 4-2, the 'Cats found cushion the next inning, scoring six times off five hits. Bazin walked, advanced on a wild pitch, and then scored on a single from junior Andrew Born. Born then scored on another single from Agard, who himself came home on a monster double from Johnson.
The upsurge continued, as Jones brought Johnson home on a single down the right field line, and then Sidwell belted his homer over the right field wall.
Junior Josh Smutzer earned the win, tossing 5.1 innings and scattering six hits. He allowed two runs, both unearned, and struck out three. Classmate Connor Gordon picked up the three-inning save.
The Hoyas and Wildcats face off in the rubber match Sunday, slated for a 1 p.m. start.
