DAVIDSON, N.C. – Led by a dynamic start from sophomore Allen Barry, Davidson baseball (2-1) picked up the Opening Weekend series win, downing Georgetown (1-2) 8-1 Sunday at Wilson Field after splitting Friday and Saturday's contests.
In his first collegiate weekend start, Barry had a shaky first two frames, walking four batters, but then settled into a rhythm, allowing just two hits in six scoreless innings, striking out six. The right-hander only faced above the minimum in two of his six innings, aided by heads-up play from catcher Jake Sidwell, who collected both a pick off and caught stealing in the 1st to get the 'Cats out of a potential jam.
Davidson recorded nine hits in the affair, led by senior Brian Fortier and sophomore Justin Lebek, who each chipped in two hits apiece. Fortier scored twice with two doubles while Lebek added three RBI. It was the first time in his four years that Fortier has hit two doubles in one game, and Lebek, in his first career start, registered both his first career hit and RBI. Sidwell tied a career-high, earning three walks.
The game was a stalemate through the first three and a half frames, until sophomore designated hitter Eric Jones led off the inning with a hit-by-pitch, and Sidwell worked a five-pitch walk to move him over. Fortier took just one pitch before slicing the ball down the left field line, doubling home Jones to break the blank.
The 'Cats plated three more runs that inning; junior Alec Acosta placed a ball to shallow left to bring home Sidwell, Fortier crossed on a wild pitch, and Lebek singled back to the pitcher to bring in Acosta.
Davidson added cushion in the 6th, after Fortier led off with another double down the left field line. He moved to third via an infield single from classmate Will Robertson, and both crossed the plate courtesy of a Lebek single to left.
The 'Cats added a run in the 7th via a balk that brought in junior Cam Johnson, who boarded by walk, and another in the 8th, when sophomore shortstop Max Bazin singled and came home on a Johnson sac fly.
The Hoyas avoided the shutout, taking advantage of a lead off double in the 8th.
Davidson returns to action Tuesday, welcoming (RV) High Point for a 6 p.m. contest.
