HELLO, GEORGETOWN, MY OLD FRIEND
This weekend's series marks the tenth time in the last 12 years that the Wildcats and Hoyas will face off. The last time the two opened the season against each other was in 2011, where they split a two-game tilt. Davidson holds the all-time advantage at 17-10, dating back to 1930. Last year, the 'Cats took the opening contest 9-3, dropped Saturday's affair 5-3, but bounced back for a 12-8 Sunday victory.
Then-junior Jake Sidwell led the squad offensively, posting a .455 clip and scoring five times, and was aided by then-sophomore Cam Johnson, who went 4-for-10 and plated three runs.
THE DAVIDSON DUGOUT
At the cusp of its third season in the Atlantic 10, the Davidson Wildcats look to continue their uptrend in the league that has long been dominated by powers like Rhode Island, Saint Louis, and VCU. After punching tickets to the A-10 Tournament in both 2015 and 2016, the 'Cats look to seek their third consecutive trip to the postseason.
The Wildcats return 29 lettermen from last season, including nine players who saw ample amounts of starting time. Captaining the pitching staff is redshirt senior Durin O'Linger, who recorded a 3.39 ERA in 14 starts in 2016 and was second on the team in strikeouts (54). Veteran closer Westin Whitmire also returns, coming off a season where he recorded the second-most single-season saves in school history (9). He ranks seventh all-time for career saves, and needs just three more to crack into the Top Three.
Sidwell is coming off his best season offensively, where he hit .309 with 23 RBI and was in the Top 10 in the league in on-base percentage, and will return as the team's backstop and pitch caller. 2016 Team MVP Brian Fortier is also back after leading the team with a .327 average and 68 hits last year and will reign at first base.
Other returning standouts include seniors Will Robertson and Tyler Agard, juniors Alec Acosta and Johnson, and sophomores Eric Jones and Max Bazin.

SCOUTING THE HOYAS
Georgetown turned in a 25-29 ledger in 2016, finishing BIG EAST play at 8-10 and just one game shy of the postseason tournament. It was the second-straight season the Hoyas reached the 25 win plateau, and the third in the last four years. GU welcomes 12 newcomers, including two graduate transfers, and boasts two preseason All-BIG EAST selections (Mathews, junior OF Michael DeRenzi).
DeRenzi led the team a year ago, hitting .332 with 21 RBI and 32 runs scored. Senior outfielder Beau Hall joins him, who scored a team-best 34 runs and tied for a team-high three homeruns.
