DAVIDSON, N.C. – A late-game rally fell short for Davidson Baseball on Opening Day Friday, as the Wildcats suffered a 6-5 setback to Georgetown at Wilson Field.
Senior captain Brian Fortier led the offense, going 2-for-4 with a double, home run, and two RBI, while six other 'Cats collected their first hits of the 2017 campaign. Junior Cam Johnson belted a three-run shot to get Davidson on the board in the seventh.
The Hoyas took an early lead, scoring twice in the 3rd, capitalizing off a hit-by-pitch, double, and RBI groundout. They took advantage of another hit-by-pitch and two more hits to plate three runs in the seventh and take a 5-0 advantage.
Sophomore Max Bazin reached via fielder's choice in the bottom of that frame, and advanced on an infield single from senior Tyler Agard. With two on, Johnson sent the ball flying over the left field wall, cutting the deficit to 5-3.
Down by two in the 8th, senior Jake Sidwell boarded via hit-by-pitch to give Fortier some cushion as he crushed the ball over the right field deck to tie the contest.
Two singles, a passed ball, and an error allowed Georgetown to plate the eventual winning run in the top of the 9th.
Senior Will Robertson delivered two clutch plays in right field, and starting pitcher Durin O'Linger fanned five across six innings. Freshman ZJ Zabinski made his career debut, picking up two strikeouts, while Casey Sutherland worked an inning of relief, also collecting two Ks.
The 'Cats look to seek revenge Saturday, with first pitch slated for 2 p.m.
