Davidson Runs Past Iona College, 16-1

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson baseball team scored 16 runs off 17 hits en route to a 16-1 victory over Iona College Tuesday night at Wilson Field.
Davidson (11-9) outhit the Gaels, 17-4, as five Wildcats recorded multiple hit performances, including shortstop Alec Acosta who went 3-for-5 with two RBI and one run scored in his first appearance in 10 games.
Iona's (4-13) only run of the game came in the fifth inning and it was unearned.
The Wildcats scored at least four runs on three occasions, including five in the seventh thanks to pinch hitter Cameron Marshall, who hit a grand slam, which happened to be his first-career hit in a Wildcat uniform.
Evan Roberts (1-2) recorded the victory, as he pitched the first two innings and recorded two strikeouts for his first win of the season. Four other Wildcats appeared on the mound, including Andrew Ashur and Chad Moss who recorded two strikeouts apeice.
Antonio Velardi (0-2) was the first of six Gaels to appear on the hill for Iona and allowed six runs – all earned – off four hits with one strikeout and four walks for the loss.
The Gaels walked 10 batters, including six in the third inning, and hit three batsmen.
The two teams will return to Wilson Field tomorrow, March 23 for a 6 p.m. first pitch.
