Highlights
DAVIDSON, N.C. – In addition to Lee Miller going 2-for-2 including a three-run homer, freshman Allen Barry recorded his first-career win by shutting out Iona College for five innings as Davidson downed the Gaels, 9-1, Wednesday night at Wilson Field.
Barry recorded an almost perfect five-inning performance only allowing two hits, while striking out three for his first victory in a Wildcat uniform.
Miller was one of five Wildcats to record a multi-hit performance as Davidson (12-9) out hit the Gaels, 14-3. Sean Breen led both teams with a 3-for-3 performance for Iona (4-14).
After the Wildcats got on board in the fourth off an Alec Acosta sacrifice fly, Davidson started off the fifth with lead off singles from Andrew Pope and Cam Johnson before Miller slammed one over the right-field fence for his third homerun of the season to make it a 4-0 ballgame.
The 'Cats kept the momentum as five more runs crossed off four hits and an Iona error in the sixth. But the Gaels prevented the shutout in the ninth with a run that scored off a Davidson error.
In addition to Barry, four other Wildcats appeared on the mound, including Peyton Hopkins, Josh Smutzer, Cody White and Westin Whitmire who all pitched an inning.
Joe DeRosa recorded the loss for Iona, allowing one run off four hits with two walks in four innings. Five other Gaels pitched in relief.
The Wildcats will return to Wilson Field Friday, March 25 when they host Massachusetts in both teams A-10 opener. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
